Steps:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish.
2. In a bowl, mix the chopped dates with boiling water and bicarbonate of soda. Let it cool.
3. Cream together butter and sugar, then add eggs one at a time. Fold in the flour, followed by the date mixture.
4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
